Organizing arts and crafts supplies can be challenging. But if you scrapbook or are a “scrapper” – your supplies require a whole new level of organization. Every scrapper has a different style and therefore requires a different system of organization. But there are a few basic elements that will remain the same for all scrappers.

As with all hobbies, your collection of supplies as it stands today is not fixed – the quantity and variety of your supplies will grow over time. As you set up a system of organization allow for growth. This is especially true if you’re a bargain shopper who cannot refuse a good deal on paper, stickers, or ribbon. You know who you are!

Before you rush out and start buying storage boxes and bins to hold all your supplies do your research. Take the time to know what is available. Talk to veteran scrappers to find out what works for them. For visibility check out clear storage options. This allows you to see your inventory of supplies without taking everything out if it’s “home”. Also consider horizontal storage for paper. Storing paper flat keeps the edges from being damaged and the paper is less likely to curl. If you’re still not sure what tools would best to help you get organized, contact a professional organizer who specializes in scrapbooking.

Start by sorting all the supplies so you know what you have. Sort like items with like items and continue to sort. For example sort all the ribbon together. Then sort even further by sorting the ribbon by color or width or texture. The same process applies for sorting paper. Sort all the paper together. Then narrow your categories by color, size, brand, etc. Create categories based on how you will access the supplies. A professional organizer will work with you to help you understand how you use the supplies and help you find better ways to access them.

Once you know what supplies you have and you have researched what storage options are available it’s time to get organized. This is the fun part (at least, if you’re a professional organizer!). As you arrange your supplies make sure all items are accessible and visible. You don’t want to forget what you have. Once you’ve put away your supplies you can start scrapbooking. Now that all your supplies have a “home” you can rest easy knowing that your time scrapbooking will be enjoyable and organized!
