Garden Update – Zucchini Tips

I am excited to report this past weekend my garden gave me my first zucchini of the year! My garden was an experiment for me – an effort to live more green, more natural, and save money. I started the zucchini plant from just a seed. I wasn’t sure what to expect. But getting just one makes me happy!

If you’re also growing zucchini your plants are probably large enough that you may want to consider staking them to keep any zucchini from lying on the ground. Zucchinis should be picked when they are approximately 6 inches long. Zucchinis grow fast so check the plant often. I’ll be enjoying my zucchini on the grill tonight. They are delicious – sliced, sprinkled with olive oil and Old Bay seasoning. Yum!

Dinner - grilled chicken, grilled zucchini, & pasta with pesto - delic!

So how is the rest of my garden? My tomato plant is staying strong considering what it went through (a plane ride in a shoe) to get to Maryland. I am not confident I’ll get any tomatoes but I’m proud of my green thumb for keeping it alive! My sunflowers are growing rapidly. As you can see they are almost to the top of the fence line. It won’t be long till they are blooming! And my basil has been a wonderful summer treat to add to various dishes in the kitchen (I made pesto to add to pasta last night – yumm).
