Plan your Holiday Air Travel

CB016989Christmas is just 19 days away so if you plan to travel you better start making your plans. Every family I know is looking for ways to cut back on their holiday travel budget…mine included! Here are some ways to find a bargain when it comes to hitting the road…or the skies.

1. Check the Big 3expedia.com, orbitz.com, and travelocity.com

  • All of these sites have deals they broker with travel providers. Register with these sites to get on their e-mail lists to find out about sales or package deals.
  • I have found these sites useful to see what airlines fly to the destination I’m headed and then check the travel provider’s website where you can sometimes find a better deal or the same deal with a better refund policy.

2. If you travel regularly sign up for airlines and hotels loyalty programs. This allows you earn points and gets you on their mailing lists where you can learn about and be eligible for special promotions.

3. If you’re not picky about the airline or hotel chain try priceline.com or hotwire.com where you can get discounts by agreeing to buy before you know what airlines you’ll be flying.

4. Be flexible. Around the holidays it seems as though everyone is traveling so if you can leave a day later or arrive a day earlier it could save you a lot of money on airfare or in time sitting in traffic. The best days for cheap airfare – even during the holidays – are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.c48-our-christmas-tree-112908

5. Know the airline’s policies. If you could pay $200 on Southwest and your luggage is free. Or you could pay $180 on Delta and it will cost you $30 to check your luggage than it’s cheaper to fly Southwest. Since it now costs to check luggage that is more math that you have to do when you compare shop. Take the time to learn the airline’s extra fees as it could save you money when you show up for your flight on Christmas Eve.

Travel smart and travel safe…the holidays will be here before you know it. Get organized now so your holiday travels are affordable and fun!
