2010 brings us not only a new year but also a new decade and for this reason among many others it’s time to send out the old and bring in the new! “Out with the old and in with the new” is a perfect rule for organizing. Getting organized is always on the top of the lists when it comes to people’s most common New Year’s resolutions. It’s time to start this decade by getting rid of the old and cherishing the new! You can make a difference in just a few parts of your home and your whole house will feel transformed! What does this mean exactly?
Start in your clothes closet. Out with the old – if it’s old, faded, out of style, worn out, or stained then it is time to let it go. Donate or toss it immediately. Don’t delay this decision. If it requires mending do it within the next 7 days, if you don’t get it done, you’re not going to do it – soooo, let it go. Out with the old. Keep only your clothes that fit, are in good condition, you wear regularly, and you love! Closet space is precious real estate, regardless of the size, so make sure you love your clothes enough to keep them. This will likely be the hardest part of 2010 but you’ll feel great and if you do it right then you won’t miss the clothes you got rid of.
Next move to the kitchen. Purge and organize your plastic container collection. Only keep the ones you need and regularly use. After this, you’ve probably noticed extra cabinet space…resist the urge to fill it. Enjoy it!
Magazines seem to creep up on people and suddenly you have a year’s worth of unread magazines. First cancel any magazine subscriptions that you do not read regularly. Regularly means that you never get more than 2 months behind because you love the magazine that much. If you don’t make time to read the magazine then you do not love it enough to spend your money on it! Store magazines to be read in a magazine box/file. Magazines that have been read can be recycled. All of the information in a magazine can be accessed online! It’s old so let it go!
These are just 3 areas to start in your home. Start small and don’t bite off more than you can chew. Be decisive and proud of these decisions you’re making. With each items that comes into your home, something has to go! With 2010 and the clutter in your home remember this…out with the old and in with the new!
