Virtual Organizing in Action – Organizing Hair Accessories

Many people don’t try new things because they don’t completely know what it is. In talks with other organizers, we’ve found this to be true for Virtual Organizing. A recent example of Virtual Organizing occurred just last week. My sister called me to chat (this is a regular occurrence) and she was telling me about my niece, Ella’s, growing collection of hair accessories. Ella is three and has gorgeous long red hair. Needless to say with hair like that, she has acquired more than her share of bows, ribbons, barrettes, etc. My sister was struggling because she wants Ella to be able to play and sort through her collection but Ella can’t seem to contain it in the bathroom drawer. Hence bows and clips were constantly being tossed on the bathroom floor. I offered her a suggestion over the phone. THIS IS VIRTUAL ORGANIZING in action! I suggested using clear containers that snap closed (approximately the size of a recipe box) to sort the hair pieces by type or color. Use 5-6 of these containers and stack them on a shelf in the linen closet. I suggested she relocate the hair accessories to the bathroom closet rather than a drawer. When she’s ready to do Ella’s hair, Ella can get out the small containers and choose which hair piece she wants to wear.

I also offered my sister suggestions of where to buy the containers I was referencing. I offered to e-mail her links of product options. Not wanting to spend a lot of money I assured her she would find what she needed at Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store for a small investment.

My sister is self-motivated. She likes to find a good deal and appreciates hard work and structure. So I was not surprised when I received a voicemail 3 days later from my sister thanking me for the solution. She said Ella got involved in the sorting and it took no time at all. I hope hair time for Ella and mom is simplified and more fun!

Thanks so much! Our new system really is working. Sometimes I tackle an organizing project and everything is tidy and neat for the first day or two than old habits creep back in, and the disaster is suddenly staring me in the face once again. This time the hair accessories remain in order because of the ease and simplicity of Theres’a idea. Why didn’t I think of that? Thank you, Theresa for making it so easy and fun for Ella even though you’re so far away!
