I’m currently reading, It’s All Too Much by Peter Walsh. Peter Walsh is organizer extraordinaire who has written multiple organizing books and served as Oprah’s organizer. I’m only half-way through the book but I’ve picked up countless bits of wisdom. I can’t share all of it with you now but here are a few that were “post-it flag worthy” as I have been reading.
If you’ve ever worked with me or know me then you’ve probably heard me say something like this. It is a rule of thumb I love!
“Face facts: If you haven’t used an item in the last year, it is highly unlikely that you really need it or that you are going to ever get enough use from it to justify it cluttering up your home. Take the plunge and get rid of it!”
Think before you buy. If we all did this we’d have less clutter in our homes and less stress.
“…the money you spend on stuff you never really use. It could have been saved for something life changing-a vacation, or a child’s college tuition.”
Peter Walsh says it best. If you want to get organized you have to be committed – your commitment could be 10 minutes each day or one week with an organizer and then 10 minutes each day moving forward. Whatever time you commit you have to want it and you have to be ready.
“Your commitment to this project is your first step toward creating the life you want to have.”
I’d love to share more but I have to finish reading the book and I have to tell you about the next Ready Aim Organize product giveaway…

I really love your blog. Every time you put a tip, either on here or Facebook, it’s like a little reminder that everything is manageable. I grew up in a VERY disorganized house, but since becoming a mother myself I’ve learned that having an organized lifestyle (or as close to one as you can) makes other everyday challenges less stressful. You may be having a horrible morning, running late, kids screaming; the last thing you need is to forget where you put your keys or a permission slip. And I truly believe that being organized is a lifestyle. Just like eating healthy or exercising, you have to put a little effort in everyday. I know that going through the mail as soon as I bring it in means less clutter, which in turn means a less stressful environment, which in turn means a less stressed mommy. Even something like making my bed everyday really cheers me up because the room looks put together and in the evening it’s more luxurious to slide into a fresh bed. Small efforts can make a big difference in the long run!
Keep dishing out the inspiration, it is greatly appreciated!
thanks for taking the mystique out of organizing. You all seem to make even the hardest tasks manageable!
I just found your blog through a friend, and boy do I need help organizing! We just bought a house that has a built in office that has 10 file drawers, but not a single drawer for other stuff. So I’ve been looking and looking for ways to organize all the other things used in an office because right now, the counter tops are just covered in stuff.
I look forward to getting your monthly emails and tips.
Although I’ve never seen him in TV (we get no channels at my house – on purpose, TV is such a waste of time sometimes!) I’ve read just about all of Peter Walsh’s books and I find them incredibly useful in my own home and when working with clients!
neat page. I am going to add this page onto my twitter !

I have 5 kids and one of the best organizational things I have used is to color code each kid!

I enjoy your blog. I have implemented some of your suggestions and they have been working well
Every time I see disorganization, i think… What would Theresa at ReadyAimOrganize do?
Love your site and your tweets.
What a nice prize pack, could sure use those items.
Loved the “rule of thumb” you flagged about if you have not used it in a year you should get rid of it. Might solve the large qty of boxes in our garage that we are awaiting pick-up for longterm storage. Wish I had bought a RAO session for our anniversary (would you have brought cake and champagne to soften the purging process?!)
I love Peter. He is so inspiring. I just ordered the dvd.
I love reading your daily organization tips on Twitter! Keep ‘em coming
I like your organizing ideas Theresa.
