Is Real Simple Magazine Real Difficult?

I seem to have a love/hate relationship with Real Simple magazine. I enjoy reading it but find it frustrating when they show various dresses for every body type and they are all over $200. I certainly do not spend that kind of money on a dress but I guess I shouldn’t be offended; maybe I’m not their target market. Real Simple magazine is full of great ideas to organize and simplify your life. But for every great idea they offer an equally complicated idea too! Sometimes it seems as though Real Simple is real difficult!

Here are a few Real Simple suggestions that seem to over complicate what already has a simple solution. Or to simplify things…these ideas are just dumb! I find myself wondering over and over again – who takes the time to do that?

Here are a few such examples:

In January Real Simple magazine suggested using candy wrappers to gift wrap small presents.

Really? That seems like a lot of work to remember to open the candy carefully without tearing the packaging and then saving the wrapper for when a small gift might come along that needs wrapping. For a better idea, use scrapbook paper to wrap small packages or put the gift in a special gift bag.

On the website, Real Simple shares reusing a plastic bag as a mit and storage container for picking up Rover’s droppings while on a walk.

Really? This is a new use for an old item. News Flash! If you have a dog and you’re not reusing your plastic shopping bags to protect your hands while picking up droppings then you might want to consider a class on how to care for your dog.

Also online, Real Simple suggests putting a cotton ball in tip of the fingers of rubber gloves so you don’t poke a hole in the glove with your nails.

Really? Is this a problem for most people? I have long fingers and long nails and I’ve never tore a hole in the glove. It sounds uncomfortable to me.

Finally, Real Simple shares that you can use salt as an egg clean up.

Really? If I break an egg and spill some on the counter, I wipe it up with a dish rag. Why complicate it by getting out the salt. Seems to me the salt would just create a bigger mess.

Keep things organized by being patient and keeping things simple! I am a fan of Real Simple but as you might be able to tell I get little value out of the pages title “new uses for old things” each month! Nonetheless I read, laugh, and try to keep my life simple!

Welcoming Overnight House Guests

An ORGANIZED Guest Bedroom.

Since my daughter was born 12 weeks ago we’ve had a lot of out of town guests.  Luckily it’s all been family coming to help us and to meet our daughter so everyone has been very understanding that the house hasn’t been as clean as normal and while no one has gone hungry the meals have been thrown together.  But I have tried to make everyone feel welcome.  Here are some tasks you can do ahead of time to help guests feel welcome (even if you have a newborn)…

It’s easy to quickly clean a guest room; after all it is a space that is infrequently used.  But don’t clean too quickly you might miss areas.  Wipe down the baseboards and window sills with a moist rag to capture all the dust.  You may not notice your baseboards are lined in dust but your guest will when they set down their luggage or go searching for a free outlet to charge their cell phone.

A dark house can be scary (and dangerous) so add a night light in the hall or guest bathroom so your guest can find their way if they need to use the restroom in the middle of the night.

Final touches to the nightstand will help your guests feel at home.  Be sure to have a clock (with an alarm), box of tissues and a coaster for a glass of water.  Adding these extra touches will eliminate your guest feeling like a bother when they have to ask you for all the extras.

Set out towels in the bathroom or guest room so they know which ones are for them.  If they are staying more than a couple days, refresh their towels by doing a quick load of laundry.

We love having guests…in fact, our next set of visitors come Friday!

Spend Time Organizing Daily

I’ve shared before my respect for and enjoyment when reading Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project column in every issue of Good Housekeeping. In February’s issue she shares how keeping a one-sentence journal can lead to happiness. I enjoyed this concept (similar to a gratitude journal that Oprah made famous several years ago) and was struck by one paragraph that seemed to speak to me.

I’ve discovered that — perhaps counterintuitively — it’s often easier to do something every day than to do it only some days. Weirdly, it’s easier to go for a walk every day than to go four times a week; it’s easier to write in a journal every day than just once in a while. When you do something every day, there’s no debate, no procrastination, no wondering, Today or tomorrow? The action quickly becomes part of your ordinary routine, a matter of habit.

This got me thinking about organizing (are you surprised?). When I’m teaching an organizing class, coaching a virtual organizing client or working hands-on with a client in their home I often speak of the importance of “regular maintenance”. No organizing solution is ever finished. Some solutions require tweaking to make it work just right and ALL solutions require regular (daily) work. If you build this “work” into your daily routine then it feels less like “work” and more like brushing your teeth, checking your e-mail or any other task that you complete daily, without fail. I agree with Gretchen, it is easier to do something daily than periodically. It’s so easy to put non-routine tasks on the back burner.

If you want to get organized and stay organized, contributing time to your organizing solution must be done daily. Consider these tactics to help build it into your routine…
1.Set a timer each day for 10 minutes and work toward your organizing goal.
2.Spend time organizing a space each evening right before you brush your teeth (you do brush your teeth every night, right?)
3.Write a reminder note to yourself regarding your organizing to do and put it on top of your car keys. New rule, you can’t leave the house without completing the ‘to do’.

Start today and work each and every day toward your organizing goals! In no time, it’ll be a habit.

Wordless Wednesday – Sort Kid Clothes by Size

Use closet hanging-rod labels, similar to what is used in a clothing store, to sort and organize your children’s clothes by size.  This allows you to quickly access future sizes as your child grows and see what clothes you need before going shopping.  These labels can be purchased from The Container Store and other online organizing retailers.
